These cakes are available in my Storenvy [link] and Etsy [link] or you can just buy them directly from me :D

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Specially to ^maytel, at least one of this slices is coming your way!

I love these cakes! Last time I made red velvet cake I received feedback telling me that the color is actually darker... so I listened :) Each slice has pure white frosting, it looks so fluffy  each slice includes a tiny red heart, the hearts have a slight color marbling, it's an adorable effect. I'm really happy with the way they turned out, and I think I got the color of red velvet cake perfectly this time  I actually decided to make a full cake this time instead of making slice per slice, it saves a bit of time but it requires more dedication to texture them all at once without going insane. But they look so adorable together, so it was worth it :D

I actually didn't try red velvet cake until a a week ago, we were hanging out with some friends when we passed by a bakery and they had red velvet cupcakes... I asked Oka to buy me one since I had never tried red velvet. I didn't think the flavor was anything special, it was kind of chocolatey, kind of sweet, and kind of meh. I don't know if that's what red velvet cakes are supposed to taste like, but I'm not impressed so far! Red velvet is not a popular flavor here in Mexico and that was actually the first bakery that I've seen selling them, so maybe they were doing them wrong. I will try to find another bakery and give it another chance.

Technical stuff: All handmade with polymer clay by me! No molds or pre-mades were used, 100% handmade one by one with love. The techniques and materials I used were explained in my polymer clay cake tutorial.

Very pretty--the cake itself is extremely realistic (my cousin has a top-secret recipe for red velvet cake, and this looks almost exactly like it). If you're trying for extreme realism, the pointed edge should be a little more crumbly, but I actually had to stare at the slices for a few minutes to see that part, so I wouldn't really worry about it.

The only thing off is the frosting, which also throws off the slices when viewed from the top. I'm not sure how hard this effect would be to accomplish, but typically I see round cakes like that frosted in a circular motion to create a swirl on top. Same for the sides, you would sweep a knife around the cake and try to have any knife tracks go around the cake rather than up and down. It really is the only thing that breaks through the illusion of this being real cake, so overall, very nice job. You've succeeded in making me want some red velvet cake ^^.

I love them! The color looks much better and the frosting looks so thick and delicious :'D
my only critique is that most of the time I see red velvet cake made with cream cheese frosting, which is not pure white usually but slightly off-white/cream color I think :3

So cute!

Have a question tho. What does actual velvet cake taste like? We don't have it...

Thank you!

It didn't taste great, I only tried it once and I suspect it was a bad recipe because it tasted very "meh". I want to try it again from a different place and see if it's any better :D

You're welcome :D

Does it have a specific flavour or does it just taste like cake?

The one I ate had a very mild flavor, it had a slight hint of chocolate but it didn't taste like cake either. It also was very moist.

I have long since given up on clay cakes, they don't like me as much as your clay cakes love you! Yours looks amazing, as usual. While the texturing of the cake is amazing, the icing puts me off too, as the critique by ~elchadra says. How the icing was made, especially from the top view, breaks the illusion and gives away that it is clay, it almost looks like clay and not real frosting; it doesn't look especially delicious, or real. Also maybe the lighting for the top photo is not so good--the icing seems (to my eyes) to have a blue/grayish cast, making it look like clay.

From experience eating and baking, red velvet is a meh flavor in general. It is made with chocolate, but small amounts of it (a few tablespoons unlike the many chocolate you use to make a chocolate cupcake), and the red color is achieved with colorings. So it's pretty meh on its own, and the frosting is what really makes it a star. Cream cheese frosting is what is normally used for it, and by experience is one of the best matches for cream cheese. Red velvet is usually popular for its festive color--perfect for valentines and christmas--but flavor wise it's not a complete standout. (Also it can be quite more economical to make since it requires minimal ingredients. It's very easy to make it from your own home.)

However, there are a few stand outs there, truly amazing red velvets! Its flavors are more subdued in nature compared to other cupcakes, so it takes some getting used to for those who haven't had it yet.

These look fantastic! I totally love the icing - it looks so swirly and fluffy and whip-y. I just want to lick it. And little itty bitty hearts are soooo cute.

That's what I tried to do, I dunno why but I love swirly fluffy icing. If it's too smooth it looks kinda artificial  thanks for your comment :meow:

This is beautiful! I wish my fimo charms were as neat as yours, aha, my slices always end up a little wonky :S

I made some red velvet cupcakes for a friend last year. I think they had a nice fluffy airy texture to them, very light, but I agree that the flavour is very 'meh'.

Nothing 'meh' about your charms though, they are pure lovely-ness

Red velvet cake is basically chocolate cake with food coloring to make it a deep red. It has a specific type of frosting as well. (I've watched my mom make it a few times).
I prefer tiramisu as my cake of choice though :3

I gotta agree, tiramisu is so rich and delicious :D all the flavors go along perfectly! Maybe the one I ate had the wrong frosting, or wasn't as good.
