Mother's Day Artisan Crafts Feature

Sat May 11, 2013, 8:29 PM
Mother's Day is celebrated one day of May in most countries (either the 10th, 15th, 26th, 27th the first, second or last Sunday) and I just couldn't let it pass without an artisan crafts feature. There's a great variety of crafts celebrating motherhood, full of emotions and love.

Congratulations to all mothers, all honorary mothers, all mothers at heart, and all mothers of angels

But of them all my favorites are the ones made by *x-xSpitFirex-x, her work is so full of emotions and love that I cried when I saw them and read the story. I'm sure you'll enjoy them as much as I did.

And one last one that really made me laugh...

"A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts." -Washington Irving.

It's the end of times!

Journal Entry: Wed May 8, 2013, 10:01 PM

Well.. kind of... we've been under attack by our local volcano since yesterday. We're all okay, just ashy and annoyed. It began pouring volcanic ash all over us last night, and it's still going after 26 hours. The worst of it was last night, the visibility went down to almost zero and everything was covered by a thick layer of ashes in a few minutes. There's some really spectacular photos going around.

We woke up this morning under a layer of ashes that almost looked like snow. It kept falling through the whole day in smaller batches, and it was constantly lifted by every breeze so it's been on the air all day. The visibility was reduced to only a block or two, the sky was a yellowish gray all day and the light was the same color, it almost looked dirty. Volcanic ash is abrasive (it scratches surfaces), irritant to the eyes and nose, and slippery. The annoying thing got inside the house despite my best efforts to close the windows and seal the cracks. I've been sneezing all day, the air feels thick and weird, I have a scratchy feeling on the back of my throat and I've been constantly thirsty. My head is annoying me a bit and I'm just tired of it XD

Photo I took of the plants outside.

At least the ashes is the only thing it's been doing. The lava and rocks are not thrown very far, so they didn't affect anyone. The Popocatépetl actually does this every once in a while, but it hasn't been this active since 1994. It's usually just a small amount of ashes a few times each year, usually around December, so this took us all by surprise ._. I ran around like crazy making sure all my cats were safely inside the house, dusting them, and making sure they were okay. We've kept them inside all day and they HATE IT with passion, but I can't let them get dusty and then lick the ashes... ashes form a thick paste with water that is later hardened, kinda like concrete. Naturally I don't want them to ingest that. My cats are strictly house cats, but they love the garden and the front yard. We just don't let them out on the street or the other houses.

Photo of our skylight.

I'm already tired of it, I hope it stops pouring tomorrow! I actually find it quite interesting and I've been following the news closely. I'm specially interested in the way people react to it, I'm amazed by how little some people took care of themselves... surgical masks are a must in these situations, but some people breathed the ashes all day without even caring. Their throats must be killing them by now, mine is itchy and I took all the precautions I could. I don't even want to imagine what it can do to their lungs. Some people panicked and there were a few extra car accidents. Our local shelter did a great job telling people what to do with their pets and how to take care of them too, it was amazing. Lots of interesting things to study, humans :giggle:.

I also did a video because I found it interesting, and I hope someone else will find it interesting too. Also, I'm trying to make a habit of uploading videos to practice English. I guess this is something you really can't imagine unless you live close to a volcano. It's a short one, so check it out :)

My brain is still killing me and I couldn't get anything done today x.x I hope some sleep cures that. I didn't get to answer notes or messages today, sorry :( I will catch up tomorrow!

Everything will be all right in the end. If it's not all right, then it's not the end.

Looking for Volunteers for Interviews

Mon May 6, 2013, 11:46 AM
Hello everyone! How is life treating you this Monday? I hope everyone will have a great week :)

The #communityrelations team started a new project called The Artist Toolbox, if you haven't seen it yet please read it here. The article is about Photography Studios and it's also relevant to photographing crafts! It's a great read.

The goal of that series of articles is talking a bit about the tools involved in each kind of art... and well, we crafters usually have LOTS of tools and treasure them dearly. I would really love to do some articles about our tools and I really want to get everyone involved, so if you want to take part of it let me know! :)

I'm looking for all or some of the following:
  • All kind of tools used in crafts (hooks, needles, fabrics, sculpture tools, clays, glass, blowtorches, metals, oven, kiln, mixing bowls, everything!).
  • Any tool and any craft is interesting, no matter how mundane it may seem to you.
  • I will need you to photograph your tools (all of them or only your favorites, your choice) and talk a bit about them.
  • A photo of your work area or studio could be helpful too!
  • I may conduct it as an interview and ask you to answer a couple of questions for me.
  • If I get more than one volunteer from the same craft I may put you together as a single article.
  • Everything will be credited to you of course! I may use photos of your work as example too :)

If you're interested in joining this project please send a note to #CRArtisanCrafts telling us what kind of craft you do and which tools you would like to photograph and describe :)

I really hope you'll be able to join, I'm excited about the project! I can't be the only one proud of her tools and always eager to show them :)

Geek Nail Art Feature

Thu May 2, 2013, 10:03 AM
It's May, so it's time for something great! May is all about Performance Arts on #ArtHistoryProject, Performance Arts are one of those things that hit you like a shipwreck and leave your mind buzzing with inspiration. For this feature I chose two things that are very close to my heart: Nail Art, and Geek culture.

Note: If you love Performance Arts don't hesitate to write an article or feature, join the fun!

Nail art goes far beyond applying  a nice shade of nail polish, it is a piece of art that you get to parade around and show to the world. People will always notice a nice piece of nail art and commend you for it. After a few days you get a fresh canvas a new chance to explore your creativity!

nyan cat nails by ~JawsOfKita-LoveHim

Nail art involves a lot of precision and planning to make the best out of a space as tiny as a nail. Some people have created complete masterpieces on this tiny canvas, used it for miniature sculpture, or as statement pieces. Some nail art is good for everyday wear and so much fun to plan for special ocassions, some other is too delicate or bulky to wear outside of a photo session. Whatever the case, it's all beautiful!

ghibli tribute nails by ~xtheungodx

Some people feel that nail art is a waste of time since it doesn't last long and is destined to meet the nail polish remover sooner or later. There's a few ways around it, like using fake nails or special acrylic polish finishes that last for weeks... but in the end, part of its beauty is that you have to enjoy it for as long as you can, and take its end as a new beginning, a chance to do something even better next time.

What makes Nail Art and Geek culture so perfect together? I have no idea, but here's a few of the best examples I could find around DA, I hope you will enjoy them and maybe feel inspired to try it too!

Hello guys! ^maytel and I are cracking our skulls trying to figure out what needs to be done for the galleries for the Gallery Makeover Project, so you may see a few of these tiny journals popping out. I will address specific topics on each one and we need your input and feedback on them. If you want to give your opinion about any other topic, please check out this journal.

The Artisan Crafts gallery doesn't belong to me, ^maytel or any other volunteer. It belongs to YOU, the community. Neither of us would dare make anything the community is not happy with. We are not the leaders of the Artisan Crafts community, we are your humble servants. So please don't be afraid to share your opinion!

Here's the current Needlework gallery:

Needlework
          / Crochet
          / Cross Stitch & Embroidery
          / Knitting
          / Other

A couple of proposals have been made, please let us know your opinion about them!

A hard one for sure, since amigurumi is both needlework and a plushie. Some people suggested to move it to the needlework gallery. Is this a good decision?

  • Create a Needlefelting sub-cat under Needlework.

Felting, and particularly needlefelting, have become increasingly popular, and it may be time to create a gallery for them. We have two options here: create a Felting gallery under textiles, a Needlefelting gallery under Needlework, or both. Creating a needle felting gallery will house the increasing amount of submissions, but creating just one Felting gallery will make less clutter and keep all kind of felting together in one place. Your thoughts?

We are really eager to read your comments and suggestions, so please don't hesitate to write!

^maytel is pregnant!

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 24, 2013, 11:05 AM

Our lovely Artisan Crafts CV ^maytel is pregnant with her second child  I asked her to let me do the DA announcement because I've been dying of excitement for her since she texted me the photo of her pee stick yesterday morning (true story), and because it's so inappropriate of me to do it that I couldn't resist :slow:

She's now on the processes of bmaking a second baby penguin, please go and congratulate her for this great news! ^maytel was diagnosed with PCOS two months ago and told she would have troubles conceiving again, so her pregnancy is double good news! I'm sure this second baby penguin will be just as beautiful as the first one, I mean just look at this photo of Loïc (those cheeks!! eeek love!):

:iconmaytel:Unconditional Love by ^maytel:iconmaytel:

Congratulations Marie, Julien and Loïc!!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for twin girls :fingerscrossed: she thinks she's around 7 weeks, and hopes her pregnancy will bring hope to other women struggling with PCOS  The WHO estimates that it affects about 3.4% of the women in the world and as much as 80% of the cases go undiagnosed. It's a hard condition for every women that suffers it but there's treatment, and as she just proved, hope

Everything will be all right in the end. If it's not all right, then it's not the end.

Book Day Crafts

Tue Apr 23, 2013, 10:42 AM
April 23rd is the international Book Day, and I thought it would be the perfect time for a theme feature! Book Day is meant to encourage people to read, write and enjoy books (in more recent years it also began raising awareness on copyright issues). Go ahead and read that book you always wanted to read, gift a book to a dear friend, donate old books to charity, or make book crafts  I am always marveled at how creative all of you are, most of these aren't exactly books but art inspired by books, and are meant to be admired rather than read. Still, I think they're amazing and they show how important the love for books is. So here's some interesting book crafts I found, enjoy and feel free to share yours! If you've made a book craft leave a comment and I'll take a look :)

Gallery Makeover - Anthro Crafts

Thu Apr 18, 2013, 4:19 PM

One of the most discussed themes is the Anthro sub-category under Artisan Crafts. One interesting suggestion is moving it to the top gallery Anthro. I just talked to ^KovoWolf and this suggestion was mirrored in the Anthro community. So the changes would be as follow:

From this:

Artisan Crafts

    Anthro
          / Costumes
          / Masks
          / Props & Accessories

To this:

Anthro*

    Artisan Crafts
/ Costumes (might be renamed to Fur Suits)
          / Masks
          / Props & Accessories

*Just to clear things up: The Anthro gallery already exists, I'm not proposing creating a new gallery... just moving all anthro crafts there.

Pros:
  • The Anthro community will be less spread. They will have the gallery all for themselves :giggle:
  • It will give them freedom to include more Anthro Crafts related galleries (sculpture, ornaments, etc).

Cons:

  • May cause some miscats in the AC/Costumery gallery.

Another suggestion that many made is merging AC/Anthro with AC/Costumery. Opinions seem to be going back and forth whether there is a significant difference in making Anthro props, masks and costumes to deserve their own sub-cat. I'm no expert, but from what I understand there is a different set of skills required in making for example, a fur suit... not to mention that there's a whole different mindset in making anthro costumes. I personally think that's the most distinctive thing about the Anthro community, and why I think they deserve their own place.

Please leave your comments below! If you know anyone from the Anthro community, please invite them over, we need everyone's opinion!

Crafty Chat TONIGHT!

Wed Apr 10, 2013, 10:55 PM
Edit: Thank you for joining us! We had lots of fun!

I spent too much time thinking of a fun and witty way to write this journal, but my brain is overwhelmed with all the things and plans we're baking :la: so I'll be brief. Simply put, we want to bring the community together and create a bond between crafters, and we thought it would be fun to start by holding a chat session!

It will be pretty informal, just to get to know each other. Feel free to talk about crafts, projects, ask for tips or feedback on your current work. I know some people don't have other crafters in their area, so it's nice to have someone that shares your interests  It won't be anything official, scary or planned, just log in and have fun, let's see how that works out!

We decided to hold the first chat session this Friday 12th 10 pm CDT. You can check the time in your area on this link. I know it's an odd hour for certain places, and too early for pretty much all of you in Europe, but we're just testing the waters and this is only the first of many chats to come  please do let us know what day and time works best for you :)

The chat will take place in #ArtisanCrafts chatroom, we will start hanging there from time to time, so feel free to visit it and you may find us, or someone else :D hopefully there will be a lot of people this Friday, hope to see you there!

:iconcrartisancrafts:

Show me your best craft!

Tue Apr 9, 2013, 11:16 AM
UPDATE: Wow we received a lot more entries than we expected! We're really sorry we couldn't include them all, we made our best with the limitations that dA sets for icons. Maybe we could do this again and change the icon with the seasons or special events, that would be fun! It was very inspiring and encouraging to learn what piece you're most proud of and why, it was a great learning experience and we loved meeting you all a bit better :D anyway, here's the finished piece!

:iconcrartisancrafts: :iconcrartisancrafts: :iconcrartisancrafts:
Thank you all, and we're really sorry we couldn't include you all  it doesn't mean your work is not great! They weren't chosen based on quality alone, we tired to show off as many crafts as possible and pick the ones that looked better on a small scale. I will make another journal with credits to the images we used :D

Please don't forget to join the group if you haven't yet, many great events are on the way :D

Old post:

I have some good news, and I'm pretty excited about them :D

^maytel and I decided to create a Community Relations group for Artisan Crafts. Our plan is to concentrate all news, happenings, events, contests, and such in one place so that you don't have to jump from one place to another. The group will be passed along to all future Artisan Crafts Community Volunteers, so it will forever be THE place to find out all the official Artisan Crafts news and events.

The group was created just minutes ago, so it's a bit rough. Feel free to join while we put everything together: #CRArtisanCrafts

So now, we want to create an icon! For that we want YOU to be part of it! Post a link to your best crafty work here, whatever you're most proud of. We will pick some that we think best represent the beautiful Artisan Crafts world, and put them together to create our official icon. Please make sure you're okay with us using your image for the icon, your work will be credited but you will not receive any compensation other than the promotion.

We're so excited we could explode :iconexplodelaplz: we have many plans and great ideas coming!

Gallery Makeover Project

Tue Mar 26, 2013, 8:47 AM
For the last couple of weeks ^maytel has been putting together suggestions to improve the folders on the Artisan Crafts gallery, but we still need more input!!! Some improvements have already been suggested, but we have a large gallery and a big community, so surely there's more valuable opinions :D if you have anything to suggest, don't be shy! All ideas are being considered, and in the end YOU are the ones using the galleries, so it only makes sense to adjust them to your needs and ideas :) think any new folders are needed? maybe the name of one gallery is not descriptive enough? is there a confusing organization in any gallery? we are looking for your thoughts!

Please share your ideas and feedback on the journal made by ^maytel DON'T POST THEM HERE. We would like to keep them nicely organized in one place.

Tutorials/Artisan Crafts is also receiving a much needed facelift, so please go over to ^Elandria's journal to suggest the changes that you want to see.

All the galleries are currently being looked into, so if you want to share your thoughts on other galleries you can find the proper journals here.

And as always, if you have any idea, suggestion, question or doubt about the artisan crafts gallery, crafts, or maybe even DA, don't be afraid to contact me :D I would love to help!
