Miniaturists, unite!

Journal Entry: Thu Nov 17, 2011, 10:03 PM

I haven't met a single miniaturist in deviantART that hasn't made the same question at least once: Where do I submit my work?.

Whether you make dolls, furniture, clothes, props, food, scenery, buildings, trains, wargaming miniatures, models, dollhouses or many other miniatures I'm surely forgetting, at some point or another there's no appropiate gallery to submit our work. Artisan Crafts / Ceramics, Pottery & Clay / Miniatures is only appropriate if you use clay, and the next best option, Traditional Art / Sculpture doesn't make the cut most times.

As renowned artist Snowfern so eloquently stated: "as I'm moving on to different mediums, I really do wish dA had some scale dollhouse miniature section :P right now, I can only post my mini clay work under clay -> miniatures, so everything else is quite random, like my 1:12 books are under....bookmaking??".

I'm sure we've all felt like this at some point, and our art is scattered in odd galleries that have little to do with the submission. That's why I'm inviting you to SPEAK UP now. I recently noted one of our new CV with this issue, and she asked me to gather community feedback so she can bring it up to her superiors, and hopefully, make it happen :la: Let's make it happen!

I would like to offer this space as a forum so we can all discuss this topic. I'm going to read each comment and send everything back to FrockTarts, she will then do her CV magic and speak for us with the Great Llama Masters. If we all do a little bit, hopefully we will soon celebrate the opening of our very own miniatures gallery!

Disclaimer: This is not an official community project, this is something I'm trying to do on my own to get enough info to convince them and show that there's enough support and interest. There's no guarantee the miniatures gallery will be created, that's up the the DA team to decide, but that won't stop me from doing my very best.

Note: Please leave a comment so everything is one place, please don't send notes. In the report I'll send a link to this discussion, so it's best if everything is public. I'm going to wait a week or two so everyone has a chance to write a comment, it doesn't have to be anything sophisticated... just speak your mind.

What you can do

You don't have to be a miniaturist to do any of these, everyone is welcome to join us in the discussion!
  • Leave your opinion in a comment, tell us why do you think it's important to have a category for miniatures.
  • If we do succeed and the Artisan Crafts / Miniatures gallery is created, which sub-galleries do you think are needed?
  • If you have a group dedicated to anything related to miniatures, please help us by promoting this petition among your members. And if you're part of a group, ask them to promote it for us.
  • If you know anyone that makes miniatures, please send them a link to this petition so they can give us their feedback. We want to get everyone's opinion.
  • :+fav: this entry so it becomes more popular and it receives more attention! We need all the attention and comments we can get.

:squee: LET'S MAKE THIS HAPPEN :squee:

Thank you so much to everyone, I'm convinced this is a need for a growing community and it will raise awareness for our art. Even though our work is tiny, let's make our voice be heard.

I've posted on $Moonbeam13's forum concerning gallery requests for your cause. My comment is found here: [link] and the main forum is here [link]

I requested a place for deviantART Muro pieces and it was up the next day, so you never know.

HELLO I AM BACK.

I am currently emailing Danie to suggest a new subcategory and so far it goes...

Artisan Crafts
------ Miniatures
------------- Food
------------- Household Items (so bottles, furniture and such can go here)
------------- Animals/Nature
------------- Fan art
------------- Jewelery
------------- Misc

Did you read my mind? :o I swear I was just writing the note I was going to send you. I'm so sorry I'm so late.

I'm thinking

- Food
- Household items (It was also suggested as Accessories/Furnishing)
- People (or dolls, but not everyone considers what they do dolls. Dolls and figures was also suggested))
- Dollhouses and rooms
- Animals, Nature and Scenery
- Fantasy was requested several times.
- Fan art
- Jewelry
- Miscellaneous

I've also been going back and forth about suggesting for miniatures to have their own gallery, not be a part of Artisan Crafts. It was pointed out that several miniatures don't belong to artisan crafts, like miniature drawings [link] or scale models that are masterfully painted, but not constructed and therefore don't rightfully belong to artisan crafts. There's also the psychology of being an artist rather than an artisan, like ~PetitPlat mentioned [link] . And also as she mentioned, it's "cooler".

Well that's pretty much all the information I've gathered so far, so please do with it what you consider best :)

Super duper. Sent it with some descriptions so fingers crossed.

I don't think the term miniatures deems it to be childish or anything really. I like the term Artisan. It reminds me of bread.
But I guess it's all how the artist sees themselves and the utilization of keywords can help a looooooot.
Joy.

Thank you for your help in all this. I hope you know how appreciated it is.

I don't think it's childish ei4ther, or that there's anything wrong with the term artisan. I enjoy what I do and that's all I need.

Oh no, thanks to you! I really appreciate your help and support, I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope our dream becomes a reality :)

I think it should be split into sections......
For people like me who don't follow scales!
But I support this idea.

HELLO
I am so crap at replying. I apologise for not prancing about earlier but I have been reading things and taking it all in like a sponge.

So the preposition would be...?

Artisan Crafts -
-------------------- - Miniatures
------------------------------------ - Clay/Pottery/Ceramic
------------------------------------ - Other materials

Don't worry I understand! I was planning to send you and ^FrockTarts a proposal this weekend summarizing all the comments, but I'm glad you have already read it!

There's actually three proposals for the gallery:

- By scale. 1:3, 1:6, 1:12 and 1:24 being the most used by dollhouse miniaturists, but it may be difficult to accommodate people that work in different scales.

- By material. It's a good proposal, but some people expressed concern that when you start working with miniatures more seriously, mixed media becomes the standard.

- By category. There's some good lists already, but they basically refer to food, houses, furniture, animals, fan art, etc etc.

I will send you both a more detailed report this weekend :) but it means a lot to me that you stopped by! :la:

i agree that this needs to happen. i think some good subcategories would be Food, Fanart (because we all know it exists xD ), Structures, and Dollhouse (under which you could put Humans/Animals and Objects).

good luck!

I enjoy making miniatures of all kinds - however I only post my food and polymer clay items because there's no where to put them on the site. Most everything else gets filed under 'mixed media' when I do post it. I would love not only a community but even a category on dA - maybe something sectioned out into scale sizes...? The more common ones and then 'other', but that might be too complex of an organization.

I hope everything works out! All the work here featured is extremely beautiful.

Well it's a bit worrying that you don't even feel like posting your work because there's no real place for it. You just made another important point about why creating this gallery is so important.

I hope it works out too! And I'm glad you liked the art :)

I must admit I like posting in the "sculptures" category, because somehow it puts my work higher in the art-scale. Some of my work would fit in "mixed media" (I don't know if there is one though)
Because "miniatures" ring a lot like "dollhouse" ie. "kid" and "childish".

Plus, "miniatures" are going to be into "artisan crafts", and I'd rather have it into "art". Let's face it, it's just way cooler.

But I guess it's just me hoping to be recognized as an artist rather than an artisan, ah well... shoot me ^^'

Anyway, that being said:
YES we need a dollhouse category, because there a lot of dollhouse collectors out there.

Well I suppose that's a personal preference, I have no problem submitting my work in miniatures but I believe the artist has the right to tag its work however they want.

Well it's all in deviantART, isn't it? ;) so it's art! And your art is truly masterful, you're a great artist!

I`ve been on da since March and, though my experience here so far has been awesome, i`ve found this exact problem with where to post my crafts.
So this is definately my signiture on the journal... Lovely dA, please create a miniatures gallery!

Just wanted to put in my two cents here. I really think we need a miniatures sub-gallery for all physical mediums. (Things like Digital Dolls, for example, encompass all size ranges, where other things do not). I would suggest, however, that Wargaming Miniatures have their own section - they're painting work which can be completely fantastic and worthy of much praise, but most often the underlying pewter/plastic structure was molded elsewhere off of someone else's art.

I'm personally one of those wargaming minis artists, but I don't put my work up on dA because there's no appropriate place to put it, and I'd rather leave it out than clutter up somewhere inappropriately.

Thanks for making this space for things to be talked about.

This is a great idea! All of my stuff so far has been sculpted so I haven't had too many issues with categorizing it, but it really does feel like it's not the best system right now. A section just for miniatures would really help.

As for categories... Maybe furniture, food, plants, rooms and misc?

I do feel frustrated trying to submit my miniatures. I think it'd be fabulous if they added a new category for them. as for sub-categories, I'm not sure, but I know lots of people make charms for jewelry and stuff.. maybe one for charms and one for dolls/dollhouse stuff.. then maybe some beyond that? I don't think there needs to be tons of sub-sub-categories, but a few more choices would be nice. :)

I don't consider myself much of a miniature artist because I'm not that good at all, but I think this a really good idea. It's really hard to connect with other miniaturists when I need inspiration or when I just want to encourage others. Hopefully this will happen! > u <

I do origami cranes that are less than a cm long. It'd be nice to have a place specifically for minitures. They'd be lost pretty quickly in the arisan crafts section.
