This week I received messages from two different people (through Etsy and Storenvy) offering to make a review of my work. They splattered huge statics, like having millions of instagram followers, popularity, or having done it before and making people famous. Of course, their generosity was conditioned by me agreeing to send them some of my work for free. While I don't object the concept of reviewing someone's work, I worry that this has become a popular way of scamming artisan crafters to give away their work for free with promises of exposure and increasing their sales. I wanted to write this journal to tell everyone to be careful, specially if you're just starting your business and struggling to get noticed, it may sound tempting but you should never give away your hard work!
One of them was even more blunt and said that he could write a positive review of my work just by

Here's my guidelines for suggesting DDs to me, if I ever reject your submission please don't be discouraged and keep sending me more! It's impossible to accept all suggestions, specially when I already have enough suggestions for one area. Also don't forget that these are guidelines, not rules.

But sadly there's one trend I've been noticing that is very, very bad.

Let's start off with the most important thing. Now I know some cheap buyers love these low prices, but let's be honest cheap buyers-- you're not long term supporters. People who want your work for super cheap are people who will haggle or snag a deal and run. There is nothing wrong with having sales, getting rid of old charms for cheap, or even doing discounts for special occasions but you can't cater to the cheapskates! xD You want people who appreciate handmade items for what they are. And that's a unique, quality piece.

Hey guys I have a special request to make.

I need a WIRE/METAL DESIGN ARTIST who would be willing to create something for me.

I have a painful condition on my left thumb, which can lock at an almost 90 degree angle. I have to keep it immobilized at night, and any time I am doing activities in which I might accidentally bend it and lock it such as at work. I am wearing a thumb splint which is WAY to huge and very awkward. This is where YOU come in.

I would like you to design a splint for me which will be beautiful, and wearable at all times. It needs to have a metal (stainless steel or aluminum) bar at the front and back that runs the length of my thumb from the nail to just above the second joint. It can be soldered, wired, scrolled whatever it takes to make it a gorgeous and protective piece. I will provide you with the length of my thumb if you will take this on. This is a PAID commission of course.

PLEASE pass this on to all artisans you know who might be able to help...I need something like this badly because the pain of lock ups are unbearable at times.

I wish I was a materials/craft artist, and that I knew a darned thing about wire and metal work. I would love to help. I'm actually going to be taking a course in 3-dimensional form next quarter for college, and we would be learning about metalworking and creating our own stuff as part of the curriculum. Rats. I wish *Aeltari the best of luck! I hope she finds someone.
